There is a possibility of imposing sanctions against Bulgaria due to its veto on the start of negotiations for the accession of Northern Macedonia to the European Union.

The position was stated by the Republican Congressman Claudia Teni before the editorial office of the Voice of America for Northern Macedonia, BNR reports.

Two months ago, Claudia Teni and 12 other congressmen sent a letter to Bulgaria's ambassador to the United States, Tihomir Stoychev, calling for the removal of obstacles to European membership in the Republic of Northern Macedonia.

According to Teni, the Bulgarian diplomat did not respond to the message, which she interpreted as disrespect to the US Congress.

Regarding the possible imposition of sanctions against Bulgaria, Teni said the following: "I am not sure whether the sanctions are currently appropriate as an option, but they could be.

This is very effective, especially if they continue to create obstacles and radiate negativity towards Northern Macedonia and Albania. "

The congressman also said that the Bulgarian government should treat all minorities with respect, including the Macedonian one.

The United States said it had raised the issue of a "Macedonian minority" with Sofia
