Biden was at his home in Delaware during the conversation.

The talks lasted 50 minutes.

There were no comments on their content immediately after the conversation.

The conversation on the eve of Russia's meeting with the United States and NATO on security issues was initiated by Moscow.

According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, during the call the parties had to clarify their positions before important talks.

Peskov noted that this is a normal telephone conversation without a public part.

This is the second conversation between Putin and Biden in December - after talks on video.

Shortly before the call of the presidents, the representative of the US National Security Council Emily Horn noted that, according to Biden, there is no substitute for direct dialogue between the two leaders. Horn stressed that the White House is consulting with partners in the EU to develop a common approach in response to increasing Russia's military power on the border with Ukraine.

In the autumn, the media, citing intelligence, reported on the concentration of Russian troops on the border with Ukraine.

The United States and the West have suggested that Moscow is preparing a military invasion.

The Kremlin rejected these statements and demanded security guarantees from the United States and NATO - in particular, not to expand NATO to the east and not to add new members to the military alliance from among the former Soviet republics.

However, the Secretary of the National Security Council of Ukraine said that Kiev does not see a threat from Russia.

According to Alexei Danilov, Moscow can not start a full-fledged invasion physically.

Negotiations between Russia, the United States and NATO on security guarantees are scheduled for January 2022.
