Airlines have canceled about 6,000 flights around the world over the weekend due to an increase in infections with the Omicron strain.

APA reports quoting Flightaware that about 2,400 flights were canceled worldwide on Friday and 2,500 on Saturday.

About 1,000 flights are expected to be canceled on Sunday.

In addition, about 15,000 flights were delayed.

The sharpest decline was recorded in flights to the United States and China.

Lufthansa, Delta and several other companies have been forced to reduce the number of flights due to infection.
