The UN headquarters in New York was cordoned off by police today because of an armed man in front of its fence, officials said, quoted by AFP.

"The UN headquarters has been closed, police have been sent to the scene," spokesman Stefan Dujarric told AFP.

According to an employee, who wished to remain anonymous, "a man with a gun threatens to commit suicide" in front of one of the entrances to the building, informs BTA.

The boulevard near the UN headquarters is closed to traffic.

In photos seen by the AFP, the man behind the building is holding on to the fence, watched by police officers protected by a van.
