The NYPD has responded to reports that a man with a shotgun is outside the United Nations.

Police are responding to reports that a man armed with a shotgun is near the United Nations in New York while staff and delegates inside the headquarters are being asked to take shelter.

The New York Police Department is responding to several 911 calls that report a man with what appears to be a shotgun on East 42nd Street and 1st Avenue, near United Nations headquarters, Detective Hubert Reyes said.

"We have closed the building because of police activity taking place outside the UN," Stephane Dujarric told CNN.

"Everyone is in the building at the moment, the complex is closed," he said.

Otherwise, the UN Security Council meeting is currently ongoing.
