The Luftwaffe (German Army) reported that it is an Airbus A310 MedEvac, known as a “flying ICU”, with a capacity for six people, which until now had been used by the Air Forces in operations abroad.

The German Air Forces have also equipped an A319OH reconnaissance aircraft, stationed at the base in Cologne, Germany's emergency air base that keeps all resources available, in case of war or emergency, as in this case of the pandemic.

The "flying ICU" this Friday transferred patients from Memmingen, in Bavaria, one of the Länder most affected by the fourth wave, to the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, in the west of the country.

In total

, 54 patients

are scheduled to be transferred this Friday,

using different means of transport, 30 from Bavaria, 10 from Thuringia (east) and 14 from Saxony (east).

All of them were selected on Wednesday based on their state of health, good enough to allow their transport.

It is the largest intensive patient transfer operation in Germany to date, according to the team coordinating the search for beds for patients in saturated regions.

The operation will be carried out in accordance with the “Clover Plan” that plans to transfer patients first within five regions (west, north, east, south and southwest) and interregionally if it is necessary to maintain free beds within one of these "clover leaves. ", as is now the case with the southern and eastern regions.

However, the transfer of patients will only alleviate the situation temporarily, warned Roland Engehausen, director of the Association of Bavarian Hospitals, in statements collected by the public channel ARD.
