A dramatic image shows a house in the Canary Islands that managed to escape the devastating advance of lava from an erupting volcano.

Users of social networks baptized the residence on the island of La Palma as the "house of miracles".

The volcano erupted last Sunday.

More than 200 houses have been destroyed and some 6,000 people evacuated.

Lava from

the Cumbre Vieja volcano

continues to advance and scientists are unsure how much longer the eruption will continue.

The image by photographer Alfonso Escalero shows the house surrounded by rivers of lava thrown by the Cumbre Vieja volcano.

It is owned by a retired Danish couple, Inge and Ranier Cocq, who have not visited the region since the beginning of the pandemic, according to the newspaper

El Mundo

.

Ada Monnikendam, who built the house with her husband, said she had spoken to the owners who told her: "Although we cannot go now, we are relieved that it is still standing."

According to Monnikendam, the couple have friends in the region who have lost everything in the volcano disaster.

The lava has washed away houses, schools and some banana crops.

"They don't want to talk to anyone because they can't stop crying,

" Monnikendam explained.

Reflecting on the image, Monnikendam commented that it was sad to know that the house is abandoned there with no one to take care of it.

The local authorities indicated that the lava could generate a chemical reaction of explosions and toxic gases if it reaches the sea.

However, on Thursday experts declared that lava is currently moving very slowly.

It is not clear if the current will reach the coast.

The government of the Canary Islands announced plans to buy two residential developments for those left homeless.
