The EU has vowed to prevent mass "illegal migration" from Afghanistan

Syrians were one-fifth of asylum seekers for the first time in three months, and they represent the largest group.

They are followed by 13 percent of Afghans and 4 percent of Pakistanis seeking asylum for the first time.

The number of unaccompanied children applying for asylum has also risen by almost a fifth from the previous year to 4,240. Most minors have applied to enter Belgium, Austria and Germany.

In the Baltic States, Estonia and Latvia, as well as the Czech Republic and Malta, unaccompanied children have not applied for asylum.

Western Europe - Germany, France and Spain - has the highest number of asylum seekers for the first time, and Hungary, where the government strongly opposes Muslim migration to Europe, has accepted only ten candidates.

Central European leaders: Migration is not the solution to the demographic crisis

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has suffered electoral failures since opening Germany to Syrian refugees in 2015, but amid changing sentiment, mayors have proposed accepting more refugees.

The Eurostat report follows a controversial plan announced by the European Commission on Wednesday to thoroughly review non-functioning migration rules and provide better reception for refugees fleeing the Middle East and Africa.

The proposals in the plan, which are due to take effect in 2023, focus on the return of those who fail to obtain asylum.

According to Eurostat, the number of people re-applying for asylum after being denied asylum has dropped by 51 per cent since the first quarter of the year.
