Starting today, the largest cruise ship in the world begins its maiden voyage, lifting anchor from the port of Miami, the Associated Press reported.

Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas, which is about 1,000 feet long from bow to stern, is leaving South Florida for its first seven-day voyage through the tropics.

The ship was officially christened on Tuesday with the help of soccer legend Lionel Messi and his Inter Miami teammates. 

"Icon in the Seas is the culmination of more than 50 years of dreaming, innovating and fulfilling our mission to deliver the world's best vacation experiences in a responsible way," Royal's president and CEO said earlier this week. Caribbean Group" Jason Liberty. "This is the ultimate multi-generational family vacation, forever changing the status quo in family travel and fulfilling the vacation dreams of all ages on board.”

According to the cruise line, when the Icon of the Seas debuts in October 2022, it will generate the highest number of bookings in Royal Caribbean's then 53-year history. 

Icon at the Seas has 20 decks and features six water slides, seven swimming pools, an ice rink, a cinema and more than 40 restaurants, bars and lounges.

The ship can carry up to 7,600 passengers at maximum capacity, as well as 2,350 crew members, BTA notes.
