The veteran presenter said in a post on her page on the "X" platform: "Hi everyone, yesterday before the end of the hour I was joking with the staff at the studio. I was pretending to count down while the manager was counting down with me from 10-0. When we got to 1, I turned my finger as a joke and didn't realize this would be captured on camera."

She added: "It was a special joke with the team and I'm so sorry it came out on air! It was not my intention for this to happen, and I am sorry if I offended or annoyed anyone. I didn't mean viewers with this move, and it was just a silly joke directed at a few of my colleagues."

The 46-year-old presenter appeared in a video circulating on social media making an obscene move, only to realize that she was on the air and return to reading the news as if nothing had happened.

Maryam Moshiri, who is of Iranian descent and worked as a BBC news anchor for more than 15 years before being promoted to senior presenter in 2019.
