The legendary "Hollywood" sign is 100 years old.

The 13-meter letters rise on a hill near Los Angeles and are one of the emblems of the American city, Nova reports.

The inscription was placed in 1923 and originally read "Hollywoodland".

The aim was to promote the properties in the area. After years of neglect, the inscription was shortened to "Hollywood." It was replaced in 1978.
