Ryan O'Neal

(CNN) -- Ryan O'Neal, Oscar-nominated actor and star of several films such as "Love Story" and "Paper Moon," died on Friday, according to his son Patrick, who posted the news on social media. O'Neal was reportedly 82 years old.

"My father passed away peacefully today, with his loving team by his side supporting and loving him as he would have done for us," Patrick O'Neal wrote.

He added: "My father Ryan O'Neal has always been my hero. I admired him and he was always larger than life."

O'Neal's most prominent role was in the 1967 late-night soap opera "Peyton Place." His other notable roles included "Barry Lyndon" and "A Bridge Too Far."
