Count the time of the first burn
Whenever you light a candle, the wax tends to melt at the same distance from the wick as it did in the previous burning — a phenomenon known as wax memory. Candle wax that has melted and re-cooled is slightly softer than unmelted candle wax. Therefore, if you blow out the candle before the wax melts to the outer edge, your candle will continue to burn down in this narrow tunnel, leaving wax around the edges — a phenomenon known as "tunneling."
The most common mistake is lighting the candles for a very short time, which leads to the formation of tunnels. The best way to avoid this is to ensure a long first burn time, as this creates a successful wax memory. The National Candle Association recommends leaving a new candle lit for about one hour for every 2.5 cm of its diameter.
How to Get Rid of a Tunnel
If you have a favorite candle that has already started to form a tunnel, don't worry — you can still save it. To level the surface of the candle, wrap a sheet of aluminum foil around the outside of the candle, making sure that the foil extends an inch or two beyond the top of the candle. Then, gently fold the top edges of the foil toward the center of the candle, leaving the area above the wick exposed. This will trap heat and allow the wax to melt evenly. Light the candle and let it burn until the entire surface is melted and leveled.
Sprinkle the candles with salt
Salt has many unexpected uses. Add one more item to the list – salt helps candles burn longer. After you have burned the candle long enough to form a small puddle of wax around the wick, sprinkle the wax with table salt. Use a toothpick to spread it evenly. Sodium chloride compounds will slow down the melting and draining processes, so your candle will burn longer than before.
Of course, the last thing you want is the stains that have burned in your new candle, so you may be asking yourself: does the salt burn. The short answer is no. Sodium chloride is a stable compound that does not ignite even when exposed to high temperatures, so rest assured that your favorite candle will not lose its attractive appearance.
Try a salt bath
If you have a little more free time and table salt, you can make a salt bath for your favorite candles. Mix 2 tablespoons of salt with 2 cups of water, then dip the new candle in the saline solution and let it sit for 24 hours. When the candle is completely dry, you can light it. The candle will begin to melt from the inside instead of dripping down both sides. This is because the salt creates a "shell" barrier around the candle from which the wax cannot escape.
Trim the wick
If the wick is too long, the candle may burn unevenly, catch fire, or drip. It can also cause soot to form, which occurs when black smoke is released from the wick, which covers the candle jar and can even stain nearby walls. Before lighting a candle, experts recommend trimming the wick to 0.5 cm.
If your wick is too short or covered in wax, you can use a toothpick to save the candle. Simply use pliers to gently insert a toothpick into the softer wax around the center of the candle. So you will not only save the candle, but also get a bonus – a wooden wick provides a cleaner and more uniform burning than a wick from a rope.
Keep the candle away from drafts
This is perhaps the simplest tip on the list: don't place a candle under a fan, next to a current, or a fireplace. The movement of air can cause the flame to flicker or tilt, resulting in uneven burning. The flame of the candle must be stable and vertical to prolong its life.
Never do that
If you've been searching the internet for information on how to make a candle burn longer, you may have come across a suggestion to put it in the freezer for a few hours. The idea is that chilled wax takes longer to reach its goal.
However, freezing a candle can cause it to crack, especially if you get distracted and leave the candle in the freezer for too long.
