The Fire Services Department (FSD) announced today (29th) that it will adjust the entry vision test and physical fitness test requirements for four grades starting from Friday (December 12), among which fire captains and firefighters will be allowed to wear glasses for vision testing; In terms of physical fitness, the passing criteria for the physical fitness tests of both the Fire Service Grade and the Ambulance Grade will be relaxed, with the time limit for pull-ups, double-stem arms flexion, knee bend sit-ups, palm-up presses and push-ups all changed from 1 seconds to 4 seconds, and the number of times to be done within the time limit will be relaxed, and inclined pull-ups will be introduced for candidates to choose from to avoid the pull-up test.
According to the Fire Services Bureau, the vision test requirements for Fire Officers (Operations) and Firefighters (Operations/Marine) will be relaxed from next month, and candidates will be allowed to wear glasses for testing.
For the Physical Fitness Test, the FSD will revise the number of test items in the Physical Fitness Test, extend the time limit of the test items, and introduce inclined pull-ups for candidates to choose from. Details of the amendments are as follows:
Physical Fitness Test for Fire Service Grade Candidates
Pull-up ascent: Relaxation from 60 times in 3 seconds to 90 time in 1 seconds, and candidates can choose to use inclined pull-up instead instead

Push-ups: 60 reps in 25 seconds to 90 reps in 20 seconds
Physical Fitness Test for Ambulance Grade Candidates
Pull-up ascent: from 60 times in 2 seconds to 90 time in 1 seconds, and you can choose to replace it with an inclined pull-up rise
Tilt pull-ups: A new item is added as an alternative to pull-up pull-ups, and the passing standard is 90 seconds 3 times
Double-lever and arm flexion and extension: from 60 times in 7 seconds to 90 times in 4 seconds
Knee bend sit-ups: 60 reps from 31 seconds to 90 reps in 26 seconds
Palm pressure: from 60 seconds 30 times, relax to 90 seconds 26 times
Push-ups: 60 reps in 23 seconds to 90 reps in 18 seconds
A spokesman for the Fire Services Department emphasised that after the study, it was considered that there was room for adjusting the vision test and physical fitness test requirements for entry to attract more capable people to apply for the examination, stressing that candidates were required to undergo 26 weeks of rigorous basic training and meet the prescribed physical fitness standards, which would remain unchanged and therefore the adjustment of the entry requirements would not affect future rescue work.
The authorities added that they will continue to organise different types of activities to enhance recruitment publicity, such as induction talks, application workshops and exhibitions, and set up a number of FSD recruitment linkage schemes, including the recruitment link for university students, the recruitment link for Hong Kong students from Mainland universities, the recruitment link for athletes and the recruitment link for ethnic minorities, so as to publicize the adjusted entry vision test and physical fitness test requirements.
