Xu Jinshan, a former associate professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care at the Faculty of Medicine of the Chinese University of Chinese, was convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife and daughter with a yoga ball filled with carbon monoxide. Hui appealed to the Court of Final Appeal, where he alleged earlier that the trial judge had misdirected the jury over the air lockage of the yoga ball. The judge of the Court of Final Appeal handed down a judgment on the 21st, alleging that the trial judge's guidance on air locks was wrong, which prevented Hui from obtaining a fair trial, and ruled that Hui's appeal was allowed and ordered the case to be remanded for a new trial.

Appellant Hui Kam-shan faces two counts of murder, alleging that on 2015 May 5, he murdered his wife Wong Sau-fan and second daughter Hui Liling.

The appellant earlier submitted that the Police only investigated the yoga ball of the private car involved in the case about half a year after the incident, i.e. in November 2015, and it could not be ruled out that the private car involved in the case had been interfered with during this six months. Although the police officer pointed out that the air lock of the yoga ball was not found in the car, it was only speculation whether the air lock was in the car. However, the trial judge repeatedly told the jury that the air lock was gone, and when he guided it, he inferred from this basis that the questioning was misleading.
