The Education Bureau (EDB) announced today (22 December) that North Point Government Primary School (Yun King Road) will be merged with North Point Government Primary School from the <>/<> school year. The Education Bureau explained that the overall primary school-age population in Hong Kong has shown a structural decline, and the demand for primary school places in Wan Chai District, where North Point Government Primary School (Yun King Road) is located, has also continued to decrease.

According to the Education Bureau, the merger plan of the two schools will commence in the 2024/25 school year, and North Point Government Primary School (Wan King Road) will not participate in the Primary 1 Enrolment Scheme and stop offering Primary 1 to Primary 4 courses from that school year, and will cease to operate from the 2026/27 school year. Students enrolled in Primary 4 to Primary 6 in the 2023/24 school year will complete the Senior Primary Programme at the original school site, while Primary 1 to Primary 3 students will be arranged to progress to North Point Government Primary School in the 2024/25 school year. According to the Education Bureau, if it is necessary to arrange for children to transfer to other public schools in Wan Chai, the Education Bureau will provide appropriate assistance.

According to the Education Bureau, Hong Kong's overall primary school-age population has seen a structural decline

Explaining the merger arrangement, a spokesman for the Education Bureau said that due to the structural decline in the overall primary age population in Hong Kong and the continuous decline in the demand for primary school places in Wan Chai District, where North Point Government Primary School (Yun King Road) is located, the Education Bureau, as the sponsoring body of government schools, decided to merge North Point Government Primary School (Yun King Road) with North Point Government Primary School in the Eastern District after taking into account various factors in detail, including education policy, changes in the school-age population, supply and demand of school places, the overall development needs of government schools and the use of government resources.

Education Bureau: The merger allows teachers and students of the two schools to unite again and continue the history of the two schools

The spokesman said that North Point Government Primary School (Yun King Road), formerly known as North Point Government Primary School Afternoon School, is of the same origin as North Point Government Primary School, with similar backgrounds, and this merger allows teachers and students of the two schools to reunite and continue the history of the two schools. The merger will integrate the resources of the two schools and give full play to their respective strengths to provide students with a more suitable learning environment and rich learning experience to meet their different learning and development needs. The merger will also help alleviate the oversupply of school places in Wan Chai District.

North Point Government Primary School (Yunjing Road) will be closed from the 2026/2027 school year

The merger is planned to commence in the 2024/25 school year, with North Point Government Primary School (Van King Road) not participating in the Primary 1 Enrolment Scheme and discontinuing the Primary 1 to Primary 4 courses from that school year, and will be discontinued from the 2026/27 school year. Students enrolled in Primary 4 to Primary 6 in the 2023/24 school year will complete the Senior Primary Programme at the original school site, while Primary 1 to Primary 3 students will be arranged to progress to North Point Government Primary School in the 2024/25 school year. If parents wish to arrange for their children to transfer to other public sector schools in Wan Chai, the Education Bureau will provide appropriate assistance.

The EDB will provide the necessary resources and support according to the actual needs and circumstances of North Point Government Primary School (Yun King Road) and North Point Government Primary School in the coming years to help schools properly take care of students' learning and growth. The spokesman reiterated that the EDB will continue to closely monitor the changes in the student population and maintain close communication with the trade. As the future decline of the school-age population is structural rather than transitory, the EDB encourages the trade to plan early to maintain the overall quality of education while ensuring the continued development of the school system as a whole and making good use of resources.
