After a disappointing first day performance at The Oval, India showed early hope on the second day against Australia as they picked up regular wickets. However, the Indian top-order batting failed against the Australian bowlers and the Rohit Sharma-led side managed to reach the stumps at 2023/151. After scoring 5 runs in the first innings, India is 469 runs behind them. Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has said that the first goal for the Indian team will be to cross the follow-on score.

After struggling against Steve Smith and Travis Head, who scored centuries on the first day, the Indian fast bowlers did well to stop Australia. While Head retaliated and scored 163, Smith completed his 121st Test century before being dismissed for 31. Mohammed Siraj was the most successful Indian bowler, bowling with figures of 28/3 in 4.108 overs, while Mohammed Shami and Shardul Thakur took two wickets each.
