A grandfather, who initially refused to let his grandchildren donate organs, received a card-in-wish from the recipient and said, "Their (the recipient's) health is our happiness."
The topic of organ donation has recently set off controversy, and whether great love continues is never a simple choice question.
Some organ donation liaison officers pointed out that the biggest challenge in the work is that donors often die suddenly, and families are facing sudden bereavement, and it is not easy to talk about organ donation in a short period of time. Two HA Organ Donation Liaison Officers also said that it was not convenient to comment on whether organ donation was compatible with the Mainland's policy, but their posts were to bring out the meaning of organ donation, sharing that they had handled a case of donation to Taiwan in the past, saying, "Great love should have national boundaries, age and gender."

Tuen Mun Hospital Organ Donation Liaison Officer Cheung Suk-wen, who has been in this position for 10 years, said that the donation figure has been "sluggish", mentioning the biggest challenge in her work, she bluntly said that many donors died suddenly, their families are facing sudden bereavement, many people want the deceased to "keep the whole body", do not consider organ donation, and some will also worry about "making a wrong decision" because the deceased did not mention the willingness to donate organs before his death.

Zhang Shuwen mentioned a case she handled last year, a young man suffered an accident and suffered a severe head injury, when she mentioned organ donation with the young man's family, including grandpa and grandma, grandpa immediately shook his head and refused, but then the grandfather took the initiative to find Zhang Shuwen and said, "I want to change my mind."

The grandfather explained that he felt that his grandson's heart was very strong and could not bear to be cremated like this, and decided to change his mind and let his grandson donate organs to help others. Later, the recipient wrote down a heart card and asked Zhang Shuwen to give it to her grandfather, and after receiving it, he replied to Zhang Shuwen: "Their (recipient's) health is our happiness."

Liang Yutian, director of organ donation liaison at United Christian Hospital, mentioned that once met a girl who died of brain stem due to asthma and cardiac arrest, and her family had never heard of the girl's willingness to donate organs, but Liang Yutian later found the girl's registration in the Central Organ Donation Registration Register, and when the family knew the girl's wishes, they were also very happy to accept, hoping that the girl's organs would be "used as much as possible", and finally donated heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, corneas and other organs, saving seven patients, "the family is so relieved."

Leung Yu Tim continued to say that when a man died of a brain stem due to a stroke, he also had no intention of donating organs to his family before his death, and his wife was initially reluctant, but then the man's son recalled hearing his father say: "If I don't see it one day, I don't mind donating organs to help other patients." His wife agreed to comply with her husband's wishes, and eventually his husband's organs helped other patients.

Recently, organ donation has attracted much public attention due to the organ transplant mutual aid mechanism in China and Hong Kong, and Chief Executive Lee Ka-chiu's claim that the application for cancellation of the Central Organ Donation Registration Register is suspicious.

Asked if she was worried that the explanation would take more effort, Cheung Shuwen said that she believed that the society was still digesting the news, and for the time being, she could not see any intention to affect Hong Kong people's organ donation. She also mentioned that in the past, there were two cases of organ donation to Taiwan in Hong Kong, one of which was handled by her, when she talked to the donor's husband, the other party only focused on hoping that his wife's organs could help people, "Great love should have borders, age, gender."

The two organ donation liaison officers also mentioned that about 80 to 120 patients die from brain stem in Hong Kong every year, of which only 40 to 45% will agree to organ donation. As many patients in Hong Kong are currently waiting for organ donation, it is expected that even with the cross-boundary donation mechanism, it is less likely that organs donated by Hong Kong people will be donated across borders.

When asked if he would like to set up an option for organ donation, so that donors or family members can choose whether to accept cross-border donations, Leung Yutian said that it is not convenient to comment on the policy, but in his post, he hopes that the public will understand the meaning of organ donation, and also call on the public to remember the original heart and love, "(organ donation) is not about helping people and saving people."
