4. Purchase Mainland car insurance

Hong Kong private cars travelling to and from Guangdong Province via the bridge must comply with the statutory vehicle insurance requirements for third-party risks of automobiles in Hong Kong and the Mainland. According to the Mainland's regulations, compulsory motor vehicle accident liability insurance is required in accordance with the national regulations, including Mainland Motor Vehicle Accident Liability Insurance (compulsory insurance) and "Equivalent First Recognition" insurance. Generally speaking, Hong Kong private car owners can purchase statutory vehicle insurance for the two places separately through the Hong Kong insurance company providing the relevant services, under a one-stop arrangement.

However, there is a cap on the number of vehicles travelling per day, and if the number of bookings exceeds the limit, the Transport Department will allocate them by computer lottery. As for the daily vehicle limit, it is yet to be announced by the authorities.

In addition, the Transport Bureau pointed out that a number of car park operators in Guangdong Province are upgrading their car park management systems to make it easy for Hong Kong and Macao vehicles to use.
