Coronavirus outbreak (COVID-19) 32648

The agency notes that a new wave of COVID-19 has swept the country.

Schools in parts of China have been ordered to take precautions.

Chinese state media quoted leading Chinese epidemiologist Zhong Nanshan as predicting about 65 million new cases a week as of the end of June, when the wave is expected to peak. According to Zhong, there are currently about 40 million cases per week.

Experts believe that between 80% and 90% of all 1.4 billion Chinese people became infected during the last wave of coronavirus in December and January, but immunity is now believed to have fallen.

There are still no official figures on the number of deaths caused by COVID-19 in China in winter. According to estimates of foreign experts, their number is about 1 million people.

China to lift requirement for negative coronavirus test for arrivals

In December last year, China abruptly abandoned its previously strict zero-covid policy after three years of strict compliance. Hospitals were ill-prepared for the consequences. This time, no infectious wave similar to the last one is expected, but health authorities warn that elderly and sick people are at particular risk.
