The residents of Mbae Chundi Municipality in the region have killed and burned two hyenas after the animals were found to be a major problem for local residents.

This was explained this week by local residents when they spoke to this newspaper during the burning of the hyenas.

Mbae Chundi resident Masudi Mohamed said they had made the decision on purpose because every day the hyenas are losing their property, such as livestock and crops in the countryside.

"They've burned them out of anger, they've eaten a lot of their stuff like goats, cattle, chickens and corn in the fields, so they've been very destructive of people's property," Mohamed said.

Another local resident, Salum Issa, said that for about a month, the hyenas have become a major nuisance to local people, so to avoid the problem, they decided to burn them to protect their property.

However, he urged the government to help them manage the challenge of the animals in their areas as it endangers their safety, property, but also backs the efforts they are making for their development.

Local government member Sada Saidi acknowledged the problem on the street and said the hyena incident had been affecting residents and making peace on their property and their safety in general.

However, he said it was not good to kill the animals and burn the animals illegally as they had to wait for the authorities to come and deal with the problem.

He said the local government has already submitted information on the animal problem in the area to the municipal administration, and procedures are underway to ensure the issue is addressed.
