[Reporter Liu Wanjun/Tainan Report] A 65-year-old woman surnamed Wang is a terminally ill patient with lung cancer. Fever, the home nurse found that the patient's wound was red, and the fever was suspected to be caused by wound infection. Through the wound outreach medical service provided by the Wound Care Center of Chi Mei Hospital, the medical team went to the patient's home to provide professional medical treatment, and he has gradually recovered. No hospitalization is required.

Lin Youcheng, director of the Wound Care Center of Chi Mei Hospital, said that according to the latest population estimation report of the National Development Council, Taiwan will enter a super-aged society (the proportion of the elderly population is greater than 20%) in 2025, and the care of the elderly and patients is becoming more and more obvious. Many elders have "difficult-to-heal" wounds that cannot be healed for several years. The main reason is that the patients have limited mobility and cannot go to and from the hospital to seek medical treatment on time.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Health and Welfare, there are about 370,000 people with chronic wounds in Taiwan, accounting for about 1.5% of the total population.

Lin Youcheng pointed out that chronic wounds refer to multiple courses of treatment, or wounds that have not been healed in a single course of treatment for a long time, usually due to insufficient self-healing ability of the body or improper treatment methods.

These chronic wounds are also related to Taiwan's 3.7 million people with diabetes and 770,000 people on kidney dialysis.

Since its establishment in 2018, the Wound Care Center of Chimei Hospital has accepted the entrustment of home care institutions. When it is impossible to declare health insurance benefits, it will go to the case's home in the form of reporting support. Some patients with difficult-to-heal wounds will be served free of charge. For debridement and wound treatment, first use the video outpatient service method to allow physicians to assess the wound condition, and then evaluate whether to provide physician outreach wound care services, effectively reducing the suffering of patients and their families traveling back and forth.
