Chen Youcheng suggested that kidney dialysis patients should avoid eating winter noodles and wide noodles, because the phosphoprotein ratio is as high as 430 and 720mg; schematic diagram.

[Health Channel/Comprehensive Report] According to the statistics of the US Kidney Registry System, the population density of kidney dialysis in Taiwan ranks first in the world.

In this regard, Chen Youcheng, Director of the Nephrology Department of Xintai General Hospital, said that once a patient enters the stage of dialysis, he needs to consume high protein and limit the intake of phosphorus at the same time.

He calculated how much phosphorus content (phosphoprotein ratio) is in 1 gram of protein in the food. Among them, winter noodles and wide noodles contain as high as 430 and 720mg of phosphorus. Therefore, he suggested that kidney dialysis patients should not choose to eat.

Chen Youcheng stated on the Facebook page "Dr. Chen Youcheng Kidney Specialist" that before and after kidney dialysis, patients have completely different nutritional needs.

Before dialysis, in order to reduce the burden on the kidneys, it is necessary to strictly restrict protein (low-protein diet), but when entering the dialysis stage, it is hoped that kidney friends will consume more protein, because nutrition is an important factor in determining the prognosis of kidney dialysis patients.

In the case of high protein intake and limited phosphorus, how should it be done?

Chen Youcheng shared a method: calculate the "phosphorus/protein ratio" of food, which means "the phosphorus content per gram of protein in food", and the unit is "mg/g protein".

The lower the ratio, the lower the phosphorus content per gram of protein, and the more suitable as a food source for dialysis patients; on the contrary, the higher the ratio, the less suitable as a food source for dialysis patients.

Chen Youcheng suggested that the phosphoprotein ratio of the food ingested by kidney dialysis patients should be less than 15.

Chen Youcheng listed the phosphoprotein ratios of 10 major food categories (unit: mg/g protein).

Among them, the top 5 with higher phosphorus content are: wide noodles (720.0), winter noodles (430.0), egg tofu (150.7), black sesame candy (55.5) and frozen scallops (54.0).

The phosphoprotein ratio of other foods is shown in the table below:

The unit is: mg/g protein.

Chen Youcheng reminded that the phosphoprotein ratio of winter noodles and wide noodles is extremely high. These two foods are low in protein and are suitable for chronic kidney disease patients who have not yet entered dialysis.

However, due to the extremely low protein content, the phosphoprotein ratio naturally explodes, and low-protein foods are not suitable for kidney dialysis patients, so kidney dialysis patients should not choose to eat them.

The staple food is rice and noodles, the ratio of phosphoprotein is relatively low

Chen Youcheng pointed out that staple foods such as brown rice and oats have a high phosphoprotein ratio and should be avoided.

A relatively safe choice is rice and noodles, both of which are staple foods with a medium to low phosphoprotein ratio.

In addition, in processed foods, the phosphoprotein ratio is generally high, so special attention should be paid to "egg tofu", which has a phosphoprotein ratio as high as 150.7.

Chen Youcheng also mentioned that nuts, seeds, most beans, sauces, and cakes and snacks related to peanuts, chocolate, and sesame are almost all foods with a high phosphorus-to-protein ratio and should be avoided.

Although the phosphorus content of dairy products is not high, but the phosphoprotein ratio is relatively high, therefore, it is not suitable as a source of nutrition for kidney friends.

Crab leg meat, grass shrimp and scallops should be avoided

As for seafood, Chen Youcheng said that the phosphoprotein ratio of seafood has a very wide distribution, ranging from low to high.

Such as: squid, tilapia, cod, milkfish and salmon, the zonulin ratio is relatively low, and they are high-quality protein sources for kidney dialysis patients.

On the contrary, there are also seafood foods with a very high phosphoprotein ratio, such as: crab leg meat, grass shrimp, big-headed shrimp, red shrimp and frozen scallops, etc., which should be avoided.

Finally, many people have myths about whether eggs are suitable for kidney dialysis patients.

In this regard, Chen Youcheng reminded that as long as the yolk is removed from eggs, most of them are fine.

Chen Youcheng said that before and after kidney dialysis, the nutritional needs of patients are completely different.

Before dialysis, in order to reduce the burden on the kidneys, it is necessary to strictly restrict protein (low-protein diet), and enter the stage of dialysis, the situation is the opposite; the picture shows the situation.
