[Reporter Lai Xiaotong/New Taipei Report] 7-year-old Xiaoyu is a highly sensitive child with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and mild autism. Daily oral care is not easy, resulting in severe tooth decay. Yadong Hospital integrates child and adolescent psychiatry , Department of Anesthesiology, performed root canal treatment for Xiaoyu, and made stainless steel braces to solve the long-standing caries problem.

Lai Juncheng, a physician in the Dental Department of Yadong Hospital, pointed out that according to research statistics, 2.5% and 9.5% of children in the United States suffer from autism and ADHD respectively, and about 1% and 10% in Taiwan.

Although Taiwan has a comprehensive health insurance system and social subsidies, Slow Flying Angels often suffer from uncontrollable behavior during the treatment process and cannot obtain good medical care, resulting in serious dental caries problems.

After the doctor's examination, he found that there were many primary caries and secondary caries under the fillings in Xiaoyu's mouth. Because of his highly sensitive personality, he was more frightened and cried loudly than children of the same age when he came to the clinic. The miserable crying could be heard clearly even in the corridor outside the clinic; but Xiaoyu was not completely unable to cooperate, and could complete simple intraoral examination and communication.

After Lai Juncheng's assessment, he decided to cooperate with the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and the Department of Anesthesiology. The Department of Psychiatry stabilized Xiaoyu's emotions and strengthened his attention through drug control. The Department of Anesthesiology evaluated Xiaoyu's physical condition and the smoothness of the airway under general anesthesia.
