Although some of the grandmother's remedies do relieve the discomfort of minor ailments, studies of their ability to heal often do not support the therapeutic effect we hope for.

Womans World decided to evaluate popular home remedies for common ailments, including back pain, cough and hypertension, based on scientific studies that compare their benefits with those of traditional medicines.

Here's what happened.

The heat helps soothe back pain

In ancient Egypt and Greece, heat therapy was used to treat pain.

Now, research published in the journal Value in Health shows that it is still the best medicine for chronic back pain.

The study concluded that compared to pain medication, heat wraps were a less expensive way to relieve lower back pain for participants.

Because heat therapy helps reduce discomfort and increases blood flow to the problem area, speeding up healing.

Chocolate can cure a persistent cough

Delusion.

The claim that chocolate helps relieve coughs better than cough medicine is misleading.

The claim comes after news agencies misquoted a 2016 study as supporting the consumption of all chocolate products for cough relief, when the study only looked at chocolate-flavored cough syrup.

There is no scientific evidence that chocolate helps coughs, study co-author Aline Morris, MD, explains to Healthline.

Coconut water can lower blood pressure

Coconut water lowers high blood pressure, and a 2013 study supports this claim.

A six-week study found that participants with hypertension who drank coconut water daily had significantly lower blood pressure levels than participants who did not.

Researchers attribute this benefit to the potassium content in coconut water, which relaxes the walls of blood vessels.

Grandma's remedies are useful, useless, but sometimes they can cause significant harm to health.

Therefore, if you have problems with it, talk to your doctor first.
