The patients in the weight loss clinic return to the clinic regularly, and after the family members leave the clinic, they tell the doctor about his (or her) weight loss routine.

The 23-year-old Mr. Huang currently has a body mass index (BMI) of 36. He said: "Every time I just sit and watch TV, my family will remind me: 'You are sitting still, no wonder you can't lose weight.'"

Please read on...

Mr. Huang felt aggrieved because he had only just been active for a period of time, and every time he was active, he would be out of breath and needed to rest.

He felt that the care and urging of his family has caused him a lot of pressure over time, and the current stagnation in weight has made him even more frustrated and feels that he is not doing well enough.

19-year-old Ms. Li currently has a BMI of 30. She said that her mother often said, "You eat too much unhealthy food outside. It is easy to lose weight if you eat healthy food cooked by your mother at home. Come! Eat a little."

Li’s mother’s care and love caused Ms. Li to eat out and eat again at home. As a result, she consumed too many calories and her weight continued to exceed the standard... But Li’s mother believes that eating out is why Ms. Li can’t lose weight The reason is to reduce eating out and eat more healthy food at home, but Mama Li did not consider it. Ms. Li came home too late, so she needed to eat out to avoid hunger and discomfort during meal times. A WEIGHT REDUCTION STRESS!

Stress is a common and easily overlooked obstacle to weight management, and it is an important factor leading to weight gain (Figure 1).

I have encountered many obese patients clinically, but the kindness of family members has caused pressure on patients' weight management.

Only letting go, encouraging, and understanding can become a help

Healthy weight loss is by no means immediate (Figure 2). With the assistance of diet adjustment, regular exercise and medication, family members can also focus on the following three points in order to help patients lose weight more effectively:

●Let go: Let go of the gains and losses in your heart about the results of weight loss, and accompany patients to establish a healthy and effective behavior change process.

●Encouragement: Weight loss involves the change and establishment of habits, and the process is hard. Family members can give patients more words of encouragement and less blame or orders.

●Understanding: Accompany the patient to the weight loss clinic, understand the patient's helplessness and stressors in weight management, and provide appropriate assistance (Figure 3).

Through effective communication, Mr. Huang's family members no longer blame Mr. Huang for not moving. As long as Mr. Huang reaches the basic exercise volume set by the medical team, the family will give him affirmation and encouragement; Ms. Li, with the assistance of the medical team, increased Chinese food intake, learning to choose the right food outside, and after her mother understood her difficulties, she never asked her to finish another healthy dinner when she came home.

After turning their family's concern into help, the weight of Mr. Huang and Ms. Li finally stopped rising and fell.
