Geita Regional Police Commander, Safia Jongo has given permission to passengers to record road safety officers who take bribes from drivers and then use him to deal with them.

Commander Jongo said this today while talking to drivers, passengers and transport agents at the main bus station in Geita at the launch of the road safety week.

He said that it has become a practice for road safety officers when they check and find out that the car has a deficiency, then they take money from the drivers instead of writing a fine or taking action.

"When a soldier does not perform his duties, or when a soldier stops them, you see that he takes bribes, corruption is the enemy of justice, corruption is the cause of an increase in accidents, we should not accept it.

"The driver has been speeding, the policeman has seen it, and you have seen it, but the policeman is taking a bribe, I, the Police Commander and the police of Geita Region, do not tolerate a policeman who takes a bribe.

"If you have modern phones (smartphones), send us photos (videos), and that will be the end of it, but take the phone number of the policeman who will go against the procedures and give me information," he said.

He has ordered every passenger bus to post the telephone numbers of the commanders of all regions when they pass by, so that when passengers see a lack of understanding or a violation of the traffic law, they can provide information quickly.
