In Bulgaria, a stroke occurs every 10 minutes, and 5,500 of the Bulgarians who have had a stroke die in the hospital, Prof. Rosen Kalpachki, chairman of the Bulgarian Stroke Society, said at the National Press Club of BTA.

According to him, Bulgaria is "at the back of the queue" in terms of treatment and holds the record for morbidity and mortality from stroke in the world.

The consequences of a stroke can be severe for the patient and his relatives, he added.

Bulgarians die of stroke four times more often than EU citizens

.

In our country, four times less thrombolysis is applied - a method of treating the condition.

In eight Bulgarian hospitals, more than five percent of thrombolyses are performed, and in three hospitals - more than 10 percent of stroke cases, Prof. Kalpachki pointed out.

There are 130 units in Bulgaria that accept stroke victims, but only a few of them perform thrombolysis.

In 2022, five hospitals refused to perform thrombolysis, according to data from the Hospital Index, a project of the Gallup polling agency.

Every year, 800,000 people in Europe suffer a stroke, Prof. Kalpachki also pointed out.

Stroke is already being talked about as a curable disease, and there is convincing evidence that it is preventable, manageable and treatable, added the doctor.

Prevention, application of modern treatment methods, as well as personalized rehabilitation and secondary prevention are needed, added Prof. Kalpachki.

For more than 20 years, there has been evidence that this is the direction and trends in stroke management, he added.

This is what our body smells like if we have a deadly disease

Over 47,000 cases of stroke are registered in our country every year, last year there were 2,000 more, said sociologist Parvan Simeonov from Gallup, BTA reported.
