It has been rumored in the market for a long time that Apple hopes to no longer rely on Qualcomm. In the future, iPhones will use self-developed 5G chips. Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon personally confirmed at MWC 2023 this week that this rumor may come true.

Amon said in an interview that “Apple and Qualcomm have not yet discussed the 5G chip order for 2024.” He speculated that this may mean that Apple’s iPhone 16 intends to use self-developed 5G chips and completely break up with Qualcomm.

In fact, Apple has been trying to develop self-developed 5G chips, and even acquired Intel-related business teams. It was originally reported that Apple’s goal was to switch in 2023. Unfortunately, the development process has not been smooth, so Apple is still inseparable from Qualcomm at this stage.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also said recently that Apple has restarted the development of the iPhone SE 4, and there are two major changes, including upgrading the OLED screen and adopting Apple’s self-developed 5G chip. The iPad, Apple Watch and other product lines are expected to follow up. Cutting Qualcomm may be in the not-too-distant future.

However, whether the iPhone 16 will really be replaced with Apple's self-developed chips, I am afraid it still depends on Apple's development progress, and there is no definite answer at this stage.
