With the awakening of nature, bright sunshine and green sprouts, which are so pleasing to the eye, dangers for the eyes also appear.

What can affect their condition and how to prevent problems, says Klavdia Garyga, an ophthalmologist at the Novy Zir medical center in Khmelnytskyi.

UV rays

The first thing to consider is that there are more sunny hours during the day.

And if there is more sun, then it is necessary to protect our eyes, in particular the retina, from the negative effects of ultraviolet rays.

After all, it affects not only the skin, but also the surface and internal structure of the eye.

So, the general advice for everyone is to wear sunglasses.

Especially for people with age-related macular dystrophy, a disease that progresses and affects the central part of the retina, which can lead to vision loss.

Choose only glasses with special UV protection.

So, in order not to harm yourself, buy this accessory only in optics, and not on layouts or in shopping centers.

Only the opticians guarantee that the lenses have polarization, because they check the product for quality.

The color does not matter here - choose the color, however, as well as the shape and manufacturer, according to your preferences.

If you have vision problems (myopia, hypermetropia, astigmatism) and wear glasses anyway, switch to photochromic ones in the spring.

In them, the lenses darken when going outside, reliably protecting the eyes from ultraviolet rays, and become transparent again indoors.

"I advise all my patients with vision problems to have two pairs of glasses.

For the winter period, when the sun is inactive, they are normal, for spring-summer-autumn - photochromic with diopters.

An ophthalmologist writes a prescription for glasses according to the structure of the eye, and in optics, the patient simply states that he needs photochromic ones.

And the consultant already offers a color option - gray or brown.

Now, in principle, there is a choice," explains doctor Klavdia Garyga.

Just don't confuse "chameleons" with photochromes, because the first option does not darken well outside and darkens indoors.

And in photochromic glasses, under the influence of ultraviolet light, a quick light darkening occurs, and this is enough to protect the retina and comfortable vision.

When you enter the room, they become completely transparent, while the dark lens in this case does not have a very good effect on the eyes.

And it is important to note: those who wear contact lenses should also use sunglasses.

Allergy

Spring is traditionally ushered in by allergy season.

Pollinosis - allergic conjunctivitis or rhinitis - can appear on buds, pollen, the smell of trees, flowers and herbs.

Then it is recommended to use special antihistamines, such as pills, drops.

Just don't self-medicate, be sure to consult a specialist.

"When there is an exacerbation of allergic conjunctivitis or any allergic manifestations, I recommend patients to give up wearing lenses for a while, because lacrimation, swelling of the mucous membrane of the eye can provoke negative changes in its condition.

For example, more redness, a stronger manifestation of allergies," says the ophthalmologist.

Avitaminosis

After winter, due to the lack of light, greens, fruits and vegetables in the diet, full walks in the fresh air, the body is exhausted, so vitamin deficiency is a common phenomenon.

Of course, it also affects our eyes.

People with refractive errors (when you can't see far or near) are advised to drink a two-month course of vitamin complex in the spring.

However, not just any – it should be prescribed by an ophthalmologist based on the eye's individual needs for this or that trace element.

Usually such complexes include vitamins A and D in a sufficient dose and omega.

"For patients who have problems with the retina, for example, patients with age-related macular dystrophy, it is mandatory to take vitamin complexes specifically for the retina.

This should include lutein, zeaxanthin, and omega," Ms. Garyga notes.

If there are already eye problems, then neglecting vitamins in the spring season can further lead to deterioration of vision and rapid eye fatigue.

General fatigue of the body is also often observed.

  • The sunny day is getting longer and warmer, so be sure to walk in the fresh air for an hour or two.

    Of course, in sunglasses - this way you can give your eyes a break and get rid of overstrain, because the eyes work at different distances, which is very useful for vision.

  • Have your vision checked by an ophthalmologist, who will prescribe vitamins if needed.

  • If you experience discomfort or dry eyes, use good tear substitutes.

  • In case of allergic manifestations, which are often aggravated in the spring, take anti-allergic drugs after first consulting a doctor.
