[Reporter Liao Xueru/Hsinchu Report] A man in his 40s sought medical treatment for symptoms of upper abdominal pain after eating in recent months. The doctor found inflammation and gastric ulcer in the patient's stomach through upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. In some cases, the presence of Helicobacter pylori was even found in the pathological biopsy; after the patient received gastric ulcer-related drugs and antibiotics against Helicobacter pylori, the condition of the gastric ulcer improved and the infection of Helicobacter pylori was successfully cured.

Dr. Li Youzheng, Physician of Gastroenterology and Hepatobiliary Medicine, Zhubei District, National Taiwan University Biomedical Hospital in Hsinchu, said that the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection is quite high in all countries in the world. According to recent research, about 30% of the people in Taiwan suffer from Helicobacter pylori infection.

Clinically, although Helicobacter pylori has been considered the most common cause of peptic ulcer (including gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer), only about 10% of infected patients will progress to peptic ulcer, and most infected patients are not obvious Chronic inflammatory symptoms, then it is necessary to check to determine whether there is Helicobacter pylori infection.

However, Li Yuzheng reminded that the lack of obvious symptoms does not mean that there is no risk. Under the continuous inflammatory reaction of the patient, changes such as glandular atrophy and intestinal metaplasia may occur in the gastric mucosa, that is, the original normal gastric mucosa is damaged due to chronic inflammation. The epithelial cells of the gastric mucosa become similar to the epithelial cells of the intestinal mucosa. Over time, they may become precancerous lesions, and may even develop into gastric cancer.

Li Yuzheng pointed out that Helicobacter pylori is often the key to the process of cancerous lesions. According to statistics, except for gastric cancer near the esophagus, more than 80% of gastric cancers in other parts can be attributed to Helicobacter pylori infection, such as common gastric glands. Cancer, as well as lymphoma in the stomach; therefore, some patients suffering from gastritis in the outpatient department are treated with antibiotics to eliminate bacteria, not only the symptoms of gastritis disappear, but also the gastric cancer derived from Helicobacter pylori infection is relatively prevented.

Li Yuzheng reminded that the risks brought by Helicobacter pylori cannot be ignored. If the public has symptoms such as upper abdominal pain, they should seek medical treatment as soon as possible, and further examination and treatment can prevent subsequent related diseases.
