A portrait of King Charles, 74, to appear on new stamps was unveiled by Royal Mail this week, marking the first time in 70 years that a monarch other than Queen Elizabeth II has appeared on British stamps.

The new stamps will go on sale on April 4, just over a month before the king's coronation.

Unlike his mother, whose picture showed her wearing a crown and jewels, Charles favored a simpler portrait.

"Kings haven't always worn crowns, so the King has quite rightly decided that this is the look he wants and we're very pleased to show the look he's chosen," explained David Gold, director of external affairs and policy at the Royal yard, - writes People.

We will remind you that last autumn the Royal Mint presented new coins with the image of the face of King Charles III.

The author of the design of the new coins was the British sculptor Martin Jennings.

The portrait of Charles on the coin is also different from that of Elizabeth II.

Many different stamps with portraits of Queen Elizabeth II were issued during her lifetime.

For example, these six stamps were issued by Royal Mail on 20 April 2016 to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II's 90th birthday.

They show Elizabeth with her father King George VI, Princess Anne and Prince Charles, the Duke of Edinburgh and even Nelson Mandela in 1996.
