A small Californian mouse entered the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest mouse in the world, AP reported.

The Pacific pocket mouse is called Pat.

It is named after "Star Trek" actor Patrick Stewart.

On Wednesday, Pat received confirmation from Guinness World Records as the oldest mouse in human care.

The age of the rodent is 9 years and 209 days.

Pat was born at the San Diego Zoo on July 14, 2013 as part of a conservation program.

The Pacific pocket mouse is the smallest mouse in North America.

Its natural habitat is the valley of the Tijuana River.

After 1932, the number of rodents decreased due to human activity in the area.

For a while, the species was even thought to be completely extinct.

In 1994, a small isolated population was discovered in Orange County.

In 2012, a conservation program aimed at preserving the animal species was launched.

Last year, 117 cubs were born.

Many of the mice will be released back into the wild this spring.

As of 2017, the population in Orange County has been stabilized and the mice do not need human care to feed.

Although mice are not the most liked animals by humans, they are important to the ecosystem because of the role they play in the spread of plant seeds, adds BTA.
