Tulips will wilt within a few days, but you can make them stay fresh longer.

A horticultural expert shared with Express.co.uk the best ways to stop wilting tulips.

Make an angle when cutting

The main reason tulips wither quickly is lack of water.

But if you cut the ends at an angle, the stem can absorb more water.

Change the water and trim

The water in the vase needs to be changed every few days and the tulips need to be re-cut each time and, as we now know, at an angle.

Place as far away from fruit as possible

Keep the vase of tulips away from fruit, which emits ethylene gas and will cause your tulips to wilt.

Do not put in the sun

Protect tulips from direct sunlight.

They will fade very quickly in the sun.

Pierce the stem with a pin

Before placing the tulips in the water, take a pin and pierce the stem just above the base of the flower head.

As soon as the flowers are in the water, air bubbles will rise up the stem.

The air bubble that forms inside blocks the flow of water to the flower head.

Because of this, the flower does not receive the necessary amount of water and begins to bend.

The hole next to the flower head is the outlet for the air bubble, thus releasing the hollow block of the stem.

Make a feed

Pour some fizzy drink — soda, tonic water, or even lemonade — into the water in which the tulips are standing.

Clear sodas are best if you don't want colored water in your vase.
