[Reporter Ling Meixue/Taipei Report] The Taiwan International Arts Festival (TIFA) of the Two Halls and the Yang Jingxiang Theater Company have been discussing the production of "Ruan Shi Liao Tianding" since 2019. It was not until 2023 that TIFA was finally launched. Playwright Shi Rufang, known as "the best interpreter of Taiwanese contemporary opera", co-wrote the legendary story of Liao Tianding's era at the end of the Taisho period. It will be staged at the Taipei National Theater from March 24 to 26.
"Ruan is Liao Tianding" combines the spirit of traditional song reciting with Western music style, challenging the skills of actors while singing and acting.

The two halls invited the creative and performance teams to jointly hold a press conference yesterday. Xiaoxiu included two theme songs "Talking about Timing" and "Xing Xing Xing" tailored by composer Ke Zhihao and music director Wang Xiwen. The spirit is integrated with Western music styles, and the actors' skills are challenged while singing and acting.
Director Yang Jingxiang said, "When advancing the story, the actors use singing to narrate the legendary story of Liu Tianting and reflect the state of mind of the characters."

"Ruan is Liao Tianding" is adapted from the time and space background of the Japanese colonial period in Taiwan in 1920. Three women with different styles reinterpret the "female version of Liao Tianding".
Screenwriter Shi Rufang said, "This is a period comedy. We did some field research based on the background of Liao Tianding's era and discovered several interesting women. The prototypes of the period story include the magician Song Xuzhai Tiansheng, the female writer Huang Fengzi, and the doctor Cai Ashin. , their story is also a symbol of the old and new situations of Taiwanese women in the late 1920s.”
