The preliminary investigation into the criminal case of Zahir Askerov, the captain of the Caspian Sea Oil Fleet, who was accused of treason, has been completed.

According to APA, the materials collected in the case were sent to the Baku Serious Crimes Court for review.

The case will be investigated under the chairmanship of judge Siyavush Hajiyev.

It should be noted that Zahir Askerov was arrested in November last year during the operation carried out by the State Security Service.

According to the indictment, Asgarov Zahir Fakhreddin oghlu, who worked as a ship captain in the Caspian Sea Oil Fleet, was involved in secret cooperation by the representatives of the special service of the country in exchange for financial interest while he was studying religion in Qom, Iran.

During the past period, Zahir Askerov collected information about the companies and representative offices of foreign countries operating in our country, the place and time of the exercises conducted by the Navy in the Caspian Sea, and the cargoes transported to the oil platforms, in order to use them to the detriment of the sovereignty and defense capability of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Zahir Asgarov committed treason against the state in the form of espionage by providing the mentioned information through a mobile phone, as well as directly during meetings with those persons in Iran.

The captain of the ship was charged under Article 274 (treason) of the Criminal Code.
