This Wednesday, Alpidio Alonso, Minister of Culture and Cardinal Beniamino Stella, envoy of Pope Francis to Cuba, attended the exhibition for the 25th anniversary of the visit of Pope John Paul II to the Caribbean country, held at the National Library.

Upon his arrival in Cuba, Stella was received by Caridad Diego Bello, head of the Office of Religious Affairs of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba;

Elio Rodríguez Perdomo, Vice Minister of Foreign Relations;

and the Apostolic Nuncio, Giampiero Gloder.

January 21 marked the 25th anniversary of the start of Pope John Paul II's pastoral visit to Cuba, the first by a Supreme Pontiff of the Catholic Church to the country.

As part of his historic five-day visit, from January 21 to 25, 1998, John Paul II celebrated open masses in various provinces of the country.

His successors, Benedict XVI and Francisco, also made pastoral visits to the largest of the Antilles, in 2012 and 2015, respectively.
