Avatar: The Last Airbender continues to dominate the North American box office for a sixth straight week and is now among the few films to surpass $2 billion worldwide, the Associated Press and AFP reported.

The film's take this weekend in the US and Canada is $19.7 million, up from last weekend's $31 million.

The film collected nearly 598 million dollars in North America and 1.43 billion dollars in the rest of the world to cross the symbolic border of 2 billion dollars., reported BTA.

Only six films in history have achieved this feat.

Three of them are by James Cameron - "Avatar", "Avatar 2" and "Titanic".

In its fifth weekend in theaters, Puss in Boots 2: The Last Wish is in second place at the North American box office with $11.5 million.

In this children's film based on the Shrek saga, the cat embarks on an epic adventure to regain his nine lives.

In third place with 9.8 million dollars was the thriller "M3GAN", telling about a creepy robot doll that was originally created as an ideal companion for a little orphan girl.

Debut "Gone," about a teenage girl searching for her mother, took fourth place with $9.3 million, ahead of Tom Hanks' "A Man Called Otto," which earned $9.3 million.
