The first case of a new variant of COVID-19 has been identified in Bulgaria, which is being monitored with increased attention by the World Health Organization (WHO).

It is a new subvariant of the well-known Omicron strain, which is the most contagious to date, Prof. Iva Hristova, director of the Center for Infectious and Parasitic Diseases (CDPD), commented in an interview for the program "This Sunday".

However, it is not severe, does not lead to more hospitalizations and deaths, reassured the epidemiologist.

Its appearance carries a potential risk of increasing the incidence of COVID-19 in Bulgaria, Prof. Hristova added.

She reminded that at the moment the flu still dominates in our country, which is more severe because our immunity has fallen after two almost zero years.

"So far we have overcome COVID-19, but we have problems with the flu.

The whole country is just burning, and the incidence is still expected to increase.

We are almost at the peak of the wave, within 1-2 weeks it will reach all areas.

Then it will start to decrease, that's the positive thing," explained the director of the CGPB.

The incidence of chickenpox among children has also increased, as well as scarlet fever, which is not a viral disease, Prof. Hristova added.

Her recommendations for people is to protect themselves and strengthen their immunity through additional intake of vitamins C and D.
