600 STUDENTS from various colleges in the Dar es Salaam region, have come out today at the Muhimbili Orthopedic Institute (MOI) to donate blood, while 400 bottles are expected to be collected in the donation.

Speaking to the press, the Director of MOI, Dr. Respisius Boniface said the need for blood is 25 to 30 bottles per day and 150 bottles per week.

"I suspect college students and various stakeholders, especially Azim Dewji, for contributing to the costs used today, blood is a sacrifice, not a pill to be bought, it is not available, so it is a very basic thing," he said.

He said that in the institution they perform major surgery for various patients, such as bones, brain, car accidents, motorcycles as well as many treatments, so the patient must receive blood.

He explained that per day they receive 10 to 15 road accident victims and among them 70 percent are bodaboda accident victims.

"Blood we are getting at 87 percent at the moment in the middle the situation was difficult and now the awakening has returned, so these who are saving our fellow Tanzanians and Tanzanians should have this spirit of self-sacrifice," explained Dr. Boniface.

The Head of Communication and Relations Department MOI, Patrick Mvungi, has said that despite the students donating blood, they are also being educated on the importance of health insurance for all.

"And also these young people have received education about the importance of health insurance and they will be good ambassadors in the community," he said.

And the Acting Head of the Communication and Relations Department of Muhimbili National Hospital, Neema Mwangomo has said

Muhimbili use 150 bottles but they get 50 to 60 bottles.

He said that those who need blood are cancer patients, children with cancer, pregnant women, surgery patients and others.
