January 20 is a symbol of our people's indomitable will and readiness to fight for national independence and freedom.

In those days, our people, who were subjected to merciless military aggression by the Soviet army, did not kneel down and did not lose their determination for freedom.

The brave son of our nation, a wise statesman, the great leader Heydar Aliyev from Moscow, the 100th anniversary of whose birth this year is celebrated, demonstrated his solidarity with his native people despite all the persecutions, expressed his strong opposition to this bloody crime committed by the leadership of the USSR, strongly accused its organizers, and brought the incident to justice. , characterized it as provocation against democracy and humanism.

Braving the brutality of the military regime, more than one million people flocked to the main square of the city, not even fearing persecution or death, and entrusted their martyrs, who sacrificed themselves for freedom, to the holy land of the Motherland in accordance with our national traditions.

Thus, the tragedy of January 20, which laid the foundation of the path leading us to independence, was engraved in the history of the national struggle of the independent Azerbaijan state as a record of honor and heroism of our people, an example of national unity, the first struggle and the first moral victory of this glorious path.
