[Reporter Chen Jiayi/Taipei Report] With the Lunar New Year approaching, every household has started to carry out year-end cleaning one after another. Cleaning glass, scrubbing floors and other tasks will use various cleaning agents.

However, the Environmental Protection Agency reminds that cleaning agents should not be mixed. If used improperly, it may cause physical discomfort, and even cause chlorine poisoning to endanger lung health. It calls on the public to pay special attention when using them.

In order to remove old dirt, or worry that a single cleaning agent is not strong enough, people may mix bleach with cleaning agents.

However, Chen Shuling, deputy director of the Chemical Bureau of the Environmental Protection Agency, pointed out that when some chemical substances are mixed, depending on their chemical characteristics and the amount added, they may produce chemical reactions such as toxic gases and exothermic heat.

Chen Shuling gave an example. The main component of bleach is sodium hypochlorite. If it is combined with a detergent containing hydrochloric acid, it may react chemically to generate toxic chlorine gas. When the concentration is low, it will irritate the mucous membranes of the eyes and respiratory tract, causing discomfort such as redness, swelling, heat and pain. Symptoms; when the concentration is high, it may cause chlorine poisoning and cause chemical pneumonia and other problems, endangering lung health.

In addition to being incompatible with bleach, hydrochloric acid should not be mixed with toilet or drain unclogs.

Since the main component of the dredging agent is ammonia water, if it is accidentally mixed with hydrochloric acid, it may produce toxic and corrosive gases.

In addition, Chen Shuling also reminded the public that they should avoid direct contact with cleaning agents with strong decontamination effects with their hands, so as to avoid serious damage to the skin caused by their chemical components.

Chen Shuling emphasized that only one type of cleaning agent should be used at a time when cleaning, and remember not to mix them, and wear masks and gloves, and open windows to allow air circulation; if the public finds physical symptoms such as stinging eyes and difficulty breathing, they should seek medical treatment as soon as possible.
