There is nothing sadder about housework than clothes ruined in the wash.

A favorite white t-shirt that's turned unevenly pink after being washed in a mixed cycle, or a cashmere sweater that's been ruined by hot water to a size that's better for your pug, can ruin the mood for a long time.

Experts told Express.co.uk what mistakes we often make while washing and how to avoid them.

So let's see what we're doing wrong.

We forget to clean the pockets before washing

Small items left in pockets easily end up in the drum of our washing machine.

At high rotation speeds, these objects can damage the fabric.

Always check your pockets for non-washable items such as coins, bills, tissues, headphones and keys.

Don't look at the label

According to the expert, people often do not check the labels of their clothes and simply assume that all clothes need to be washed in the same mode.

Many people always set their machines to wash at 40°C or 60°C, which can be harmful to some types of clothing.

Each type of material requires a different washing speed and temperature.

For example, wool and silk should be washed at a temperature of 30°C in the delicate wash mode, and they should not be dried in a tumble dryer.

We leave the clothes unstrapped

People often forget to straighten twisted socks or pantyhose or blankets, close fasteners.

But things tucked inside themselves or tangled in other items of clothing can cause uneven washing.

Experts recommend that you carefully straighten your clothes and even fasten all the buttons, zippers and fasteners of your clothes to ensure that other materials don't get damaged or caught in the wash.

Also, be very careful with Velcro fasteners.

Do not wash Velcro items with thin knitwear or, for example, sportswear.

Velcro can catch on the fabric and ruin it.

Do not turn the clothes inside out

A laundry expert advised washing denim inside out to prevent fading too quickly.

It will also help protect the surfaces of other garments from friction damage during washing.

It can also extend the life of old and aged more delicate denim items.

It is also worth turning inside out things with graphic prints, appliqués and decor made of rhinestones or sequins.

What cannot be washed

According to a laundry expert, there are two categories of things that should never be machine washed.

They include:

  • ties

  • silk things

The expert recommends giving these things to dry cleaning.
