The Muhimbili Orthopedic Institute (MOI), has started providing one-year training for its specialists, where 40 patients will undergo modern surgery to remove blood that has leaked in the brain and block the veins.

Speaking to journalists today, the Director of MOI, Dr. Respisius Boniface said that they are getting an increase in patients with ruptured blood vessels in the brain and it is caused by pressure.

He explained that in a week they get patients with ruptured blood vessels in the head and bleeding in the brain 7 to 10 and in a year 120 to 150.

"Every day experts talk about non-communicable diseases that are increasing rapidly and they encourage people to avoid changing the lifestyle that causes problems.

"We have seen that together with prevention, we plan to treat them and we have started special training, to help our country we will be teaching and we have started with Prof. Atanasi from Germany, this is continuous training," he said.

"Now we have started with MOI specialists and then later we will go with doctors from other hospitals and we will do it for one year," he emphasized.

Dr. Boniface has said that the operations have a cost of Shs eight to 12 million and abroad Shs 50 to 60 million so for each patient Shs 40 million have been saved.

"In the past, high blood pressure used to affect adults 55 to 60 years old, but now we have young people up to 35 years old because of changes in life and if the patient is delayed, the brain dies, even if he is treated, he cannot return to normal," he explained.

A specialist in brain, spine and nerves, Nasforas Rutabasigwa has said that expertise is increasing, so they expect to treat 40 patients a year and in four phases they will treat 10 patients.
