Experts told Express.co.uk what mistakes people make when loading dishwashers and why it's important.

Tilt - dirty side to a cent

First, make sure your plates and dishes are tilted toward the center of the dishwasher.

The water comes from the middle of the device, which means that the side facing the middle of the device will wash best.

This means that it is important to place the dirtiest side of the plate, bowl or dish with an inclination towards the middle.

No pre-rinsing

Experts do not advise washing plates before sending them to the dishwasher.

People often think that food particles can accumulate at the bottom of the machine and interfere with quality washing, and although this is partly true, regular cleaning of the device will be more effective than rinsing the plates under the tap before washing in the machine.

Experts say that most dishwashers and dishwasher tablets are designed to handle food particles and do just fine with them.

Take care of your teeth

The small teeth that hold your plates upright are a very important structural element, plates and bowls should be placed between the teeth, not on top of them.

When your plates and bowls fit between the teeth, it allows water to flow more freely onto the top rack of the dishwasher.

Placing anything on top of the teeth will make it difficult or impossible to clean items on the top shelf.

Do not overload

Make sure you don't overload the dishwasher.

The water in the machine and the sprinklers that wash the dishes need enough space to do their job.

Overloading the machine can prevent this, and your dishes won't be washed as thoroughly as they could be.

Bowls and pans should be placed at the back of the bottom shelf at an angle to the center of the dishwasher.

Meanwhile, small plates can be loaded to fill any gaps and space will not be wasted.

Before starting the machine, make sure that dishes are not blocking the spray nozzles, as this can interfere with the entire cleaning cycle.

The spray arms contain the nozzles that wash and rinse your dishes, and blocking them can affect the effectiveness of the wash when loaded.

Never put these items in the dishwasher

Some items, unfortunately, can only be washed by hand, these include:

  • kitchen knives;

  • fine porcelain;

  • dishes made of thin glass;

  • some types of crystal glasses (for example, thick crystal whiskey glasses);

  • wooden dishes;

  • cast iron pots and pans.
