The new Omicron variant is officially called XBB.1.5 and is spreading faster than any known Omicron variant to date.

To date, cases of XBB.1.5 have been reported in 29 countries around the world, including 13 European countries.

The Kraken sub-variant first appeared in the US in the months of November-December 2022 and is believed to be responsible for the sharp increase in COVID-19 cases in the United States.

According to data from the Centers for Disease Control in the United States, this subvariant is responsible for 41 percent of the cases of COVID-19 in the country.

After the US, the new mutation was also found in some countries in Europe, Australia and parts of Southeast Asia.
