[Health Channel/Comprehensive Report] The command center announced yesterday (2nd) that the youngest among the deaths from local Wuhan pneumonia (new coronavirus disease, COVID-19) was an 8-year-old boy with no history of chronic diseases and died within 5 days of onset.

The doctor pointed out that the acute encephalitis in this case did not occur in the range of children under 5 years old in the past, and the time of acute encephalitis was similar to that of children under 5 years old. If the diagnosis has been made, it is recommended to inoculate the next-generation vaccine supplement to reduce the rate of severe illness.

The command center stated that the boy had no history of chronic diseases, and had received two doses of vaccine in May and June last year, but had not received additional doses of vaccine.

On December 25th, he started to have fever, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, chills, fatigue and other symptoms. When he arrived at the emergency room on December 26th, he developed convulsions and changes in consciousness. PCR was positive and he suspected encephalitis. He was admitted to the intensive care unit and used a respirator. Remdesivir, antihypertensive drugs, antiepileptic drugs, immunoglobulins, steroids and other drugs, computer tomography showed severe cerebral edema, and unfortunately passed away on the 29th due to the deterioration of his condition after active treatment. The cause of death was new coronary pneumonia and acute encephalitis , Multiple organ failure.

Xie Zongxue, Director of the Pediatric Emergency Department of the Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-Sen Medical University, expressed concern about the above case in a Facebook fan page "Dr. E Pediatric Emergency Room Diary" for the following reasons:

1. Age 8 years old, not the age range where acute encephalitis often occurred under 5 years old in the past.

2. No history of chronic diseases in the past, which means healthy children before suffering from new coronary pneumonia.

3. Had 2 doses of COVID-19 vaccine (in May and June last year), and the onset date (December 15 last year) was about 6 months away from the last vaccination.

4. Although it is an older child, the time of concurrent acute encephalitis is the day after the onset day (onset on December 25, encephalitis on December 26), similar to children under 5 years old, either on the day of onset or the next day.

Xie Zongxue said that the antibody concentration produced by the Wuhan pneumonia vaccine usually begins to gradually decline 3 months after vaccination, and the effect of preventing severe diseases will also decrease accordingly.

Children who have only been vaccinated with 2 doses of the basic dose, if they have not been diagnosed, are recommended to receive supplementary doses of the next-generation vaccine to reduce the chance of developing severe illness.

In addition, due to the violent outbreak of the epidemic in China and the consecutive holidays, Xie Zongxue said that his family had received the Moderna next-generation vaccine in December last year. Although the uncomfortable feeling was more obvious than the previous doses, under the current situation , which also seems to be the only way to do this.

Xie Zongxue reminded that although many people have doubts about the side effects of multiple vaccinations with the Wuhan pneumonia vaccine and the next-generation vaccine, there is currently no better way to prevent severe Wuhan pneumonia than vaccines. The next-generation vaccine supplement is the most appropriate after considering the pros and cons. method, so I still recommend that everyone try to vaccinate as much as possible.
