This is reported by the Reuters agency with reference to the British analytical company Airfinity.
According to the organization's calculations, the total number of deaths since December 1 has probably reached 100 thousand, with a total of 1,860,000 people infected.
The publication notes that Chinese authorities report only a few thousand cases of infection per day, and since December 7, only 10 deaths from the coronavirus infection have been officially reported.
Airfinity estimates that deaths will peak on January 23 at about 25,000 per day, and from December the total number of deaths will reach 584,000.
After the company's statement, it was revealed that the US is considering taking samples of sewage taken from planes on international flights to track any new variants of COVID-19.
Earlier, the US and several other countries also said that travelers from China would be required to have negative tests for COVID-19.
A sharp increase in the number of cases of coronavirus infection began in China in early December, shortly after the country decided to relax quarantine measures.
This was preceded by widespread public protests against the "zero tolerance" policy adopted by the Chinese authorities for COVID-19, which consisted of strict lockdowns on the scale of entire cities and general testing of the population.
As a result of the protests, the government allowed to weaken the epidemiological measures: to relax the lockdown, to open catering establishments, shops, cinemas and other public places.
However, as soon as the measures were relaxed, the number of cases of COVID-19 in the country increased sharply.
According to epidemiologists, due to the policy of total isolation of the sick, the majority of Chinese residents could not develop immunity to the coronavirus.
