Wu Peichang (2nd from left), director of the Myopia Prevention and Control Center of Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, broke the 4 myths about children's vision care.

[Reporter Qiu Zhirou/Taipei Report] The stage from preschool to school age is the critical period for the prevention and treatment of myopia, but many parents have myths such as "sight of 1.0 means no myopia". The survey by the National Health Service found that the sixth grade of primary schools in China is myopic. The rate has reached 70%, and parents are urged to master the "hyperopia reserve" before their children are 12 years old, so as to reduce the risk of rapidly becoming high myopia after myopia.

The National Health Administration proposed four common myths about children's vision care. The first is that "a vision of 1.0 means no myopia."

Wu Peichang, an ophthalmologist at Kaohsiung Chang Gung Hospital, pointed out that children’s eyes tend to be tense. If the pupils are not dilated for optometry, they may appear pseudo-myopia. It is recommended to go to the ophthalmology institute to dilate the pupils and let the eyes relax before the true original degree can be tested.

The second myth is "If you don't read 3C, you won't be short-sighted."

Wu Peichang said that if you use your eyes for a long time and at close range for 2 hours in a row, the risk of myopia will increase by 30%, not only for 3Cs, but also for reading, playing with building blocks, drawing, etc. Getting enough rest can make you nearsighted.

Myth 3: "It's okay to be short-sighted, just wear glasses."

Wu Peichang pointed out that glasses can only be corrected and cannot be cured. If the eyes are not properly protected, the eye axis will lengthen with puberty, and the degree of myopia may increase by 75 to 100 degrees every year, and it will become high myopia in middle and senior grades.

Myth 4: "It doesn't matter if you are short-sighted, just go for laser surgery when you grow up."

Wu Peichang said that laser surgery is to flatten the cornea on the surface of the eyeball, and it cannot cure the problem of elongated eye axis caused by myopia. Those who have undergone laser surgery should still have regular checkups, otherwise there may still be risks such as retinal detachment.

Wei Xilun, deputy director of the National Health Administration, said that myopia is a disease that is often neglected. The myopia rate in the sixth grade of elementary schools in my country has reached 70.6%.

Infants aged 0 to 3 should have 150 to 200 degrees of hyperopia, and children aged 4 to 6 should have 100 to 200 degrees of hyperopia. The degree of hyperopia will be consumed as the child ages. The probability of high myopia in the future calls on parents to master the "hyperopia reserve" before their children are 12 years old.

In order to establish the concept of "prevention of myopia, starting from an early age", the National Health Department produced a children's vision care manual and an animation lazy bag this year, and continued to promote "Eye Care 123", including regular vision checks 1 to 2 times a year, to grasp vision changes , Avoid letting children under the age of 2 watch the screen. Children over the age of 2 should not watch the screen for more than 1 hour a day. It is recommended to spend 2 to 3 hours outdoors every day, use your eyes for 30 minutes and rest for 10 minutes, go to bed early and get up early , to achieve adequate rest.
