"I asked who is this? And I asked if I could watch his tape," the duchess recalled.

She explained that it was important for her to see what Harry himself was posting on his Instagram (we now know that the prince has a private blog) because she wanted to get her own impression of him, not what the press and media were saying about him. society

And the next day, the couple already exchanged phone numbers.

Their first meeting took place in a cozy restaurant.

Meghan mentioned that Prince Harry was a few minutes late.

"He called, apologized, said he was in traffic. And I thought: "I'm not the kind of girl who will wait for a prince."

And she added that when Harry entered the restaurant, he was so sincere that he immediately charmed her.

"I even broke a sweat," Harry added.

A romantic trip to Botswana and a first kiss

They went on a few dates before Harry asked Meghan to go with him to Africa.

It was a five-day trip, in which they were just the two of them and lived in a tent.

Megan remembers that it was an adventure, because she was afraid that suddenly they would not like each other and she would have to live with him in a tent for five days and not get anywhere from it.

But mutual sympathy happened literally from the first minutes of the trip.

"We were sitting next to each other, and then we started holding hands, and then we kissed, and then everything became completely normal and natural," says the prince about their first kiss.

"We had to get to know each other before the media got involved," says the Duke.

On this trip, each of them was simply himself.

The secret affair lasted from July to October 2016

For four months, the couple managed to hide their relationship from the public.

Meghan flew to Harry in London once every two weeks.

In October 2016, Harry's press secretary told him that the press had learned about his affair with Meghan.

It was on the eve of Halloween and an employee of the prince advised the couple to "break away" for the last time.

They spent that night partying with Harry's cousin Princess Eugenie and her then-boyfriend (and now husband) Jack Brooksbank.

Meghan and Harry were wearing masks at this party.

And the next morning, the tabloids exploded with headlines that an American woman of mixed race had stolen the heart of a British prince.

Don't be cold guys," she shared. "And I remember the next day H said, 'You shouldn't talk to them.'

And I'm like, "I'm just trying to be polite, I don't know what to do, I've never dealt with this before."

And he's like: "True, but the British media say you like it. You're smiling. So you like it."

Then Harry realized that he couldn't protect Meghan from these press attacks.

And she understood that she needed protection.

The royal family did not believe that the affair with Meghan would last long

"I remember my family meeting her for the first time and being incredibly impressed. Some of them didn't quite know what to do. I think they were surprised. Maybe surprised that a redhead could get such a beautiful woman and so intelligent a woman, but the fact that I was dating an American actress was probably what clouded their judgment more than anything else in the beginning," says Harry.

It also became clear why Harry kept saying that the royal family did not protect Meghan.

They did not see why she should receive any special protection or protection.

They believed that all princely brides went through this heightened media interest.

This is a kind of "rite of initiation".

But the situation with Megan was also complicated by the fact that she was of mixed race with a different skin color.

That's when the first conversations about racism in the royal family began to appear.
